More About the Shop
Maude Complex Shop is a tiny operation, but we hope to have a meaningful impact in our community. All of our work is hand printed, and some items are dyed and made here in our studio. We are both very passionate and dedicated to challenging the utilitarian stigma, and demonstrating the immense value of making art you can use.
Maude is the founder of the shop, and she is an illustrator, pattern designer, and printmaker who specializes in block print on fabric. Her work is self-described as being “silly, cute, bizarre, beautiful, and highly therapeutic”
She is passionate about bringing people together through creative practice, and using art as a way to communicate and care for others. Her work often celebrates wildlife and nature, particularly highlighting the often under appreciated critters from our natural world.
Andrea Mildred has been a long time artistic collaborator, and officially joined the shop in 2023 as an artist and full partner. She is an illustrator, pattern designer, printmaker, and sewist who specializes in unique expressive fashion. Her previous projects span across multiple mediums and range from political zines to tiny animation shorts.
She has helped build cohesion in the spirit of community building here in Austin, and often spearheads participation in local art events and community facing pop-ups.
As an organization, we donate to causes that protect wildlife and the environment alongside those focused on protecting and restoring human rights in our society. Keep an eye out for our raffles and fundraisers, most of these announcements come through our IG, Patreon, and newsletter.
Product FAQ
We update the shop regularly with premade items as they become available, but only do preorder listings quarterly. We do four rounds of preorders per year, loosely based on the beginning of each season. The only exception to this is in winter when we usually do the update in January.
If you missed out on an item in the past, you have the option of joining our Patreon which will give you access to custom listings. This will allow you to order most things we’ve done before, or
We are deeply committed to using blank clothing items with environmental or WRAP certifications in hopes that the items I am selling are created ethically and with minimal impact to the environment.
All fabric items are machine washable, and hold up well over time. However it is worth noting that hand printed items may fade over time if they are worn daily and washed frequently. I recommend washing them similar to your favorite jeans.
shop policies
My products are individually made by hand, so variation should be expected and welcomed. I do not take returns or exchanges unless an item is defective. Please be sure to use all size charts and clothing measurements to ensure you get the perfect thing. Feel free to reach out if you’d like more feedback about the fit of each item <3
I ship using the US Postal Service, and am happy to ship to any country the USPS is currently shipping to. I try to keep shipping costs down as much as possible, but note that my shipping fees are also intended to cover the cost of packaging and handling.
If you make an error in your shipping address that results in the package not arriving, I will not be able to replace it for you. PLEASE triple check your address BEFORE placing your order.
If your package doesn’t arrive due to my own error or the post office error, please reach out to me and I will work something out with you.
the process
All of my products are created using a process called block printing, also known as relief printing or linocut printing.
I sketch each design, then transpose them to either a soft rubber block or linoleum tile. Then comes carving!! I have some fancy, very sharp tools I use to carve away the negative space of each image (and also make a giant mess of shavings all over my house)
When the block is ready to go, I saturate the image with ink then press the block to paper to transfer the image. It’s a beautiful magical process with so many opportunities for personal style to emerge.
